Essay Session General Information

  1. The Region 11 Essay Session will be held at the University of St. Francis on March 13, 2009.
  2. Essays submitted must follow the rules and guidelines in the IJAS Policy and Procedure Manual published in September 2008.
  3. Each school may enter essays. The topics will be provided in the Fall mailing from the Illinois Junior Academy of Science. Please note that the goal and nuclear essays are sent directly to the two organizations.
  4. Students may compete in Project or Paper or Essay Sessions. Dual entries are not permitted.
  5. All Essays entered must have a single author.
  6. Five copies must be submitted for regional competition. (Please note change from IJAS Policy and Procedure Manual.)
  7. Essays must be typed or done on a computer or word processor. They should have a Cover Page with the sponsor's signature, a Title Page, a Table of Contents, an Introduction, a Body, a Summary, and a listing of references cited. Essays do not have an Abstract. They should be 1200 - 1500 words in length.
  8. Essays must be stapled in the top left-hand corner and repeat the students last name in the top right-hand corner of each page. Do not use folders.
  9. Follow the citation format found in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association(fifth edition). No footnotes are to be used.
  10. Completed Judging Information Sheets must accompany the entry:
    1-2 Papers/Essays  …………………………one judge
    3-4 Papers/Essays  …………………………two judges
    5-6 Papers/Essays  …………………………three judges
    7-8 Papers/Essays  …………………………four judges
    9-12 Papers/Essays  ………………………five judges
    13-16 Papers/Essays ………………………six judges

You may enter eight Papers and eight Essays. Essays that are submitted without the required number of judging sheets will be disqualified.

Please note: Judges remain for the full day -- both morning and afternoon sessions.

It is the responsibility of the teacher/sponsor to see that all requirements and deadlines are met. If an essay fails to meet these requirements and deadlines, the essay will be disqualified and returned to the teacher submitting it.
